In the Positions and Practice module, we considered Damon Winter’s use of his iPhone and the Hipstamatic app to produce the photographic series ‘A Grunt’s Life’.
Prior to this, I had never considered using either of the above to take photographs that could be used in my projects. So, as part of my ongoing project development, I have set about photographing and editing images using the app on my iPhone 6.
I initially chose to photograph something that most of us see everyday – concrete. This has allowed me to experiment with the Hipstamatic’s filters and square format.

“Every viewer is going to get a different thing. That’s the thing about painting, photography, cinema.”
– David Lynch
I feel that the images of concrete are quite successful – some more so than others. I am particularly pleased with the top three images. I feel that on first glance it isn’t clear what you are looking at. These images require some interpretation by the viewer and as such, this draws them into the image.
The square format of the images created using Hipstamatic is something that I particularly associate with images in galleries. The desaturated colours and black and white images have allowed me to place more emphasis on the shapes and textures without the distraction of colour.
This first experiment has inspired me to trial more subjects to explore whether this technology will be of use in my project.
