Surfaces and Strategies – Shoot Mod3#13 – Performance – “Gabrielle”

I had the opportunity to photograph an amazing lady called Gabrielle.  Gabrielle is a transgender woman who was brought to the studio by her friend for a pamper session and confidence boost.

“Transgender is a term used to describe people whose gender identity differs from the sex they were assigned at birth. Gender identity is a person’s internal, personal sense of being a man or a woman (or boy or girl.) For some people, their gender identity does not fit neatly into those two choices. For transgender people, the sex they were assigned at birth and their own internal gender identity do not match.”

– (GLAAD, 2017)

Like many transgender people, Gabrielle has suffered discrimination and lack of understanding from those in her local area.  Now living in a more accepting community and with friends around her, she has begun the transition to become the person she has always known she is.

Gabrielle has also suffered loss and tragedy in her life and is now, with the help of friends, really beginning to shine.  I am pleased that I had the opportunity to photograph her and we really did have an amazing time.  There was so much laughter in the studio that my face hurt after the shoot.

As these pictures show, Gabrielle is a beautiful person and I hope to photograph her again on many occasions.
